Garden Room chic

Precisely engineered box pleats, tented ceilings and trellis-inspired walls are just some of the tenets of interiors haute couture being adopted by interior designers for garden room designs. Elegant as well as poised, these chic interior design schemes are not only witty in their use of scale and of trompe l’oeil but also offer the perfect sanctuary in which to connect with nature.

I have been writing about garden room design for some time, including a feature in the June 2022 issue of Saga magazine. Since the pandemic, so many of us have realised that a connection to nature has many benefits for our wellbeing and the idea of a ‘garden room’ in our homes is one that is proving more and more appealing.

These luxurious schemes designed by top interior designers from around the world show how the idea of a ‘garden room’ can be translated into a more relaxed style, to something more formal.

Trellis design at The Marbella Club Hotel

Thank you so much to Singapore-based interior designers E and A Interiors for sharing this design on their Instagram. I absolutely adore this walling idea by architectural designer Caroline-Marie Willms for her interior design project at The Marbella Club Hotel. The walls have been lined with bespoke textural woven rattan panels with a stencilled leaf trellis design added in two tones of green paint.

Garden room living

Such a pretty and uplifting scheme by Dublin-based interior designer Suzie McAdam where the garden room theme has subtle coastal hints. Stunning Treillage wallpaper by Pierre Frey holds the scheme with some beautifully chosen pieces of furniture including these elegantly shaped bamboo chairs.

Palm Beach style garden room

Designed by Houston-based interior designer, Paloma Contreras is a room that was inspired by iconic Palm Beach interiors. Striking painted trellis lines the walls and the ceiling along with a fabulous scheme of green and white in prints and plain fabrics. The grand crenelated pelmet ties the scheme together.

Trellis pattern wallpaper

The design description for this wallpaper by Mind The Gap is ‘Concrete Patch’ but all I can see is a very gorgeous trellis design that would be perfect for a garden room!

Garden room in Singapore

Singapore-based Elizabeth Hay Design has designed a beautiful garden room themed living/dining room in a historical colonial black and white house in Singapore.

Elizabeth achieves a very happy balance between the smart upholstered bobbin chairs with a witty Venetian Blind Green fabric by Sibyl Colefax and John Fowler along with relaxed elements of rattan and bamboo. Note too the cute hang of owl prints above the window.

Elizabeth says, “The house has a colonial feel, which we wanted to retain and embrace with the soft furnishings. The house has a very layered and eclectic feel, reflecting the owners’ lifestyle and travels. This was achieved by deploying antique textiles, a collection of vintage and antique art and objects, and mixing periods and styles in a comfortable, relaxed manner.”

Garden Room lighting

Pendant lanterns suit garden rooms and this custom one is from Coleen and Company in California who I have had my eye on for their whimsical designs.

I love the effect of a tented ceiling for a garden room be it fabric or wallpaper. For UK buyers Iksel are great for tented wallpaper mural designs whilst Vaughan and Lots Road Auction house in London are good places to find luxury pendant lanterns.

NEW Bluebell wallpaper

Perfect for a garden room: beautiful surface printed ‘Bluebells’ in Chalk wallpaper by Ellen Merchant who wowed everyone with her designs at Decorex in London in Autumn 2022. The surface printing of this wallpaper makes the design even more special and covetable.

Grand scale garden room

Alessandra Branca, who has interior design offices in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, was inspired by the idea of a tree house for this garden room at the Kips Bay Decorator Show House in Palm Beach, Florida. Alessandra’s beautiful design neatly copes with the grand scale of the room, with linen trimmed blinds that break into the room horizontally along with a symmetry of olive trees and an ever decreasing leaf wallpaper design. Tailored luxury is supplied by a beautiful linen box pleated L-shaped sofa.
