Coastal Style 2021

Each year ‘coastal style’ collections arrive with the jaunty promise of the joys of living by the sea. And this year it is going to be harder than usual to resist the urge to create your very own ‘beach house’ at home. Coastal Style 2021 offers an unpredictable global weave of inspiration from the palaces of India and Spain to West Africa and our own coastal shores.

Smart hippy chic

The 2021 coastal colour palette follows the heat of the day. Starting bright and early with cool morning blues, strolling leisurely through to hot midday turquoise and ending at dusk with velvety indigo blues. Woven amongst these waves of colour is a thread of 1970s-inspired rattan and bamboo offering a smart hippy chic vibe to this year’s interiors take on Coastal Style.

Waves of colour

The blog begins its decorating tour with Mimi Pickard’s beach house style and ends with Pink House by Rebecca’s Nigerian resist patterns:

Shell chic

The shell chic trend that I mentioned last year in my post Hebridean Island Style is growing in popularity with textile designers and for home accessories.

This shell edged lime-washed rattan place mat with palm fork and spoon would make a stunning summery tablescape, available online from Frangipani Home.

I adore this breathtaking photo of ‘the deep blue’. It was taken by a friend and ex National Magazine Co colleague Sheena Miller on a return journey via a Cal Mac (Caledonian Macbrayne) ferry from Oban to Sheena’s home on Mull. The British coastline is truly beautiful isn’t it, especially when you consider this was taken on 15 April 2021 and looks more like the Greek Islands in high summer.

Sand crocs

No trip to the beach is complete without building a sandcastle. This incredible ‘sand croc art’ was created by an assistant set decorator at the end of the day on a Laura Ashley photographic shoot a few years ago. I still marvel at it and at how quickly he created it!

Shore things

Coastal inspired shopping is the theme in the June 2021 issue (out now) of Saga magazine’s Shop Till You Drop pages. Whilst putting these pages together, I discovered lots of irresistible coastal inspired items to wear, for the home and garden as well as for gift ideas.

Organic jute ‘summer tote’, 51 x 31 x 36 cm, Β£39, The Braided Rug Company as featured in the June issue of Saga magazine.

    1. Hi Jane,

Thank you so much for your message. I am so pleased that you love the coastal look too and I completely agree about Sheena’s photo, it is so beautiful and evocative. It has been particularly difficult for many of us who haven’t been to the sea for such a long time. However, I am keeping my fingers crossed for you and for so many others who might get some sea air this summer.
